Grand Theft Auto 6: Absolutely everything you need to know about Rockstar’s next amazing GTA

It’s one of the most anticipated games of recent times – and it hasn’t even been announced yet.

But GTA 6 is definitely coming – it’s only a matter of when.

Here, we’ve gathered all the information about the game – from the expected release date to the new features we can expect to see.

GTA 5 has sold over 85 million copies since its release in 2013 – and we’re sure the next game will sell even more.

So, when’s it coming out?

Rockstar hasn’t even announced the game – so we’d expect a release date of around 2020.

That’s some time away yet. The good news is that Red Dead Redemption 2 is nearly here – and will likely keep gamers occupied for a good chunk of time.

GTA 6 Rumours and Release dateGTA V online support will be around for years to come

When can we officially expect to hear something?

Now THAT is a question. Some speculate that E3 in June may be the first glimpse, but we’re not sure it’ll be that early.

Instead, we can probably expect to see some teaser material drop at some point next year – with the game likely releasing between 2020-2021.

How long does it take to make a game as big as GTA?

Usually games take around two years – but GTA may take up to three.

Former Rockstar President Leslie Benzies said GTA production started during RDR2 development and stepped up when that was done.

So expect two years full-on development, with around one-year pre-production.

You’ll most likely take control of a few characters in the next game

Rumours have it we could see a female main character in GTA 6?

Yes, this has been doing the rounds but there’s nothing concrete yet.

It stems from the fact that Rockstar has only ever had male characters in leading roles, with women often just populating strip clubs or playing porno actresses.

In retrospect, it is pretty sexist – so having a strong female lead would be most welcome.

What about GTA Online? How long will Rockstar keep supporting GTA V?

GTA Online is still absolutely massive – so expect continued support throughout Red Dead Redemption 2’s lifespan.

Regular updates such as Doomsday Heist means there is plenty of life left in the old dog yet.

GTA Online will be around for years yet

What platforms will it be on?

GTA 6 will be on both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles – as well as the upcoming PlayStation 5 (which, again, is yet to be announced).

There will be no Nintendo Switch version, unfortunately – we’re almost certain about that.

PC gamers will once again probably have to wait a bit longer for their version, but when it does drop, it’ll be the best looking version (we think).

Expect to be able to play with multiple characters in GTA 6

What will be the biggest gamepay changes?

We don’t expect Rockstar to change too much about the gameplay – but instead focus on scale and immersion.

That’s means more detailed worlds and the biggest map they’ve ever created.

Benzies revealed last year that GTA 6 plans are still up in the air.

“We don’t know what GTA 6 will be, but we’ve got some ideas” Benzies said in an interview with Develop.

“It comes from the idea first. Where it is going to be set is the first question.

“Then that defines the missions; you’re doing different things in LA than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the mission in.”

GTA V looked best on PC – and we can expect this to be the case for GTA 6

Where will GTA 6 be set?

There has been talk of it being set in Tokyo and London, but we’re almost certain Rockstar will try and recreate the entire of the US.

Players will be able to fly or drive from one side to another – just like in Ubisoft’s The Crew.

Who knows – maybe you’ll be able to jet off to Vice City?

Will it look good?

Yep – it’ll likely be powered by a modified version of the Red Dead 2 engine – which is capable of some pretty impressive visuals.

RDR2 uses the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), which includes a proprietary physics engine, and runs along with the Euphoria animation engine.

Euphoria is what lets characters interact with the environment in a physically realistic way. So, if they crash a car, they fly through the windscreen etc.

Will there be a first-person mode?

Absolutely – in fact, as we’ve seen in the recent LA Noire: VR Case Files, there could be VR support, too.

VR Case Files has been an overwhelming critical success – so this may give Rockstar the confidence to expand the technology into a larger, more ambitious game.

After all, compared to GTA, La Noire was far more on the rails.

The LA Noire: VR Case Files has been a real success – and proves the hardware has bags of potential
