Zinedine Zidane resigns as Real Madrid manager after calling impromptu press conference

Zinedine Zidane has resigned as manager of Real Madrid after calling an impromptu press conference..

The Frenchman was only appointed in January 2016 in what was his first senior role, but has enjoyed unprecedented success in the subsequent two-and-a-half years.

He became the first manager to win the European Cup/Champions League three times in a row, while also landing a La Liga title as well as five more major honours.

But less than a week after the historic three-peat the Frenchman has announced he will be leaving the Bernabeu.

There was some squad unrest in the immediate aftermath of the Champions League final in Kiev with both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale raising questions about their future.

But not many expected Zidane to be the first man out of Madrid in just five days.

More to follow…

Interesting side stat, Zinedine Zidane will leave Real Madrid having never lost a European knockout tie, not one.

The end of the road has come for Zinedine Zidane. A history-breaking two-and-a-half years at Real Madrid: 3 Champions Leagues, 2 Super Cups, 2 Club World Cups and a La Liga title.

Will be interesting to see what he does next. What a manager 👏

Zinedine Zidane won nine trophies as Real Madrid boss, and lost just 16 times in 149 matches at the helm. Just under a trophy every 16 matches.
